Casper Pipe Project: Are your pipes lead?

Identify your water pipe materials to keep lead pipes out of Casper

The City of Casper has been actively replacing lead water pipes since 1986, so there are very few, if any, remaining lead water pipes. But it’s always best to be sure. Additionally, in 2024, the EPA is requiring that every home identify and report their water pipe materials to keep drinking water safe.

Find your pipes

To identify your water pipe, first you’ll need to find your water meter. This will be below ground, typically in a basement or crawl space. You’re looking for the pipe that is coming from the outside into the meter – not the pipe beginning at the meter bringing water into the house.

What’s Your Pipe Type?

After you’ve located your meter, your water pipes will be one of these materials: black plastic, blue plastic, copper, lead, or galvanized steel. You can identify your pipe material with visual inspection, a scratch test or a magnet test. After you’ve identified the material, let us know here. If you’re not sure what yours is, watch our video or request to have a City staffer help free of charge.

Your pipes are water service lines. But what is that?

Why is the City collecting this information?

Recent updates from the EPA require municipal water distribution systems to compile a complete inventory of all water service lines that deliver drinking water to homes, businesses and schools. To meet these requirements, the City needs your help to identify your pipes, because we are required to report every single home. To learn more about this initiative, read the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revision.
